The Shoalhaven Art Society was formed in 1963 to promote and foster an appreciation of fine arts, and recognition of the artist in the community. The big thing during 2009 was the recognition that the rent on the room in the Art Centre is higher than we can sustain, so when our lease expired at the end of December we did not renew. An agreement has been reached with the Berry School of Arts which will enable us to store our library and art equipment , and hold our monthly meetings and workshops there.
The demonstration meeting is held on the second Thursday of each month, commencing at 1.30 p.m. A committee meeting is also held each month. NOTE that a meeting is usually not held in January.
All members are welcome and encouraged to attend the demonstration meetings, which are a pleasant social gathering as well as an important help in artistic development; there are always interesting demonstrations and valuable discussions. Visitors are also welcome. Cost is $4. Members are encouraged to bring a small plate of suitable food to help with afternoon tea.
Each year there is a major open exhibition with significant prizes, and entries come from many parts of New South Wales and some other States. Smaller members-only exhibitions are also held. There is a standing exhibition of members works in the Berry School of Arts, which is changed over regularly, about each second month. There is also a standing exhibition in the Shoalhaven Hospital, which is changed over every few months,
