History of 1st Korrahill Scout Group

How can someone write a history of the 1st Korrahill Scout Group without going into the history of the two groups that have formed the 1st Korrahill Scout Group. Those histories being of the 1st Corrimal Scout Group and 1st Fernhill Scout Group. Since the 1st Corrimal Scout Group was the older of the two groups we will start our brief history of these groups with 1st Corrimal.

1st Corrimal

The 1st Corrimal Scout Group was formed.

1st Fernhill

The 1st Fernhill Scout Group was formed.

1st Korrahill

How it all started

With the untimely demise of the 1st Corrimal hall in July of 1996. The 1st Corrimal Scout Troop began meeting with the 1st Fernhill Scout Troop by invitation of the 1st Fernhill Scout Troop. It was soon realized, with the size of the combined Troops and the success that comes from running the Patrol system, that the benefits of amalgamation for all members of the movement involved in the two groups far outweighed any argument against it. All Leaders agreed that an amalgamation of the two groups into one would not only benefit the two groups but more importantly the Youth members whom they seek to serve.

And so it was that by the end of 1997 the two groups were for all intents and purposes operating as one group although final conformation of the amalgamation was still sometime off in the future. Political rangling within the scout movement saw the name of the group get knocked back because there was no geographical reference or location called Korrahill near where the group is situated, however true to the scout spirit which is so much a part of all the Leaders of the Group they soldiered on and with a little help from the Wollongong City Council's Environment and Planning Department the naming of the land on which the Scout Hall stands to Korrahill Grove saw the desired name of the group be approved.

The Joey Mob kicked off during second term 1998 with 6 Joeys invested. Leaders are Marie Van Kessell (Possum) and Catherine McGrath(Lorikeet)

The new Korrahill Scout Hall was officially opened on the 1st of August 1998. It was the end to a long process which start just after the fire in July 1996. The opening was performed by the Lord Mayor of Wollongong Mr David Campbell, himself a former youth member of the 1st Corrimal Scout Group as a Cub through to Venturers. As a parent Mr Campbells children attended 1st Fernhill Group so it was most fitting that he opened the new hall since he had connections with both groups.
