Chital are found primarily in North Queensland near Charters Towers which is where most go to look for them. They prefer thickets where their beautiful dappled hide makes them almost invisible. The only management of them is by landholders who issue permits to hunt on their land. They are a particularly striking animal with very long three tined antlers which is their most obvious distinction from the palmated fallow deer. A mature Stag stands about 900 mm at the shoulder ( about 3 ft) and weighs in excess of 85kg.

Chital prefer the warmer areas where there is lots of cover and plenty of water.  They don't have a markedly seasonal breeding period. According to one author fawns are born around April - May. Yet another says fawns are born between March and October. Chital hinds are capable of oestrus cycles throughout the year. They are capable of ovulating and conceiving soon after birthing and have the potential to produce three fawns in twenty eight months. Gestation period is about 234 days. The bucks mostly have good racks between January and June but they can be encountered with  racks at all stages of development throughout the year.
