PUBLIC STATEMENT
in defence of the Little Pebble

This statement has been prepared on behalf of all the members, supporters and associates of the Sacred Heart Community at Tyaak in Victoria, to offer to people "of Good Will" everywhere, an open declaration of our loyalty and faith in William Kamm, the Little Pebble, and his God-given Mission, following his recent Trial, and the Verdict against him, in the NSW District Court:

As Superior of the Community of the Sacred Heart, a Charbelite Priest, and foundation member of the Order of St. Charbel, I am privileged to author this statement in defence of the Little Pebble, on behalf of the Community. I am known to my brothers and sisters in the Order, as Rev. Fr. Edward C Stokes, having been Ordained as a Married Priest for the Order in January 2004.

I first became acquainted with the Little Pebble nearly 20 years ago. With my wife Bridget, I live in this Community, which we and several other families founded together in 1988, one of a number of such Communities which commenced in the founding years of the Order of St Charbel in the late eighties. We are lifelong Roman Catholics, devoted to Our Faith, who have dedicated our lives to Jesus, through Mary, His Most Beloved Mother. We are loyal to our Holy Father the Pope, and faithful to the teachings and traditions of our Church, in which we raised our family, and they in turn are raising theirs. We are not caught up in a "cult" or "sect" as so often claimed by the media and sadly, even by some officials of our own Church. We are professed members of the Order of St. Charbel, a new form of Consecrated Life for the Catholic Church, embracing priests, religious brothers and sisters, and families, and we offer allegiance to the Bishops of our Order, and to our Founder, the Little Pebble. We acknowledge that the Order awaits approval by the Catholic Church, and this is a matter of dispute with the Diocese of Wollongong, that is the subject of an outstanding Appeal to the Holy Father in Rome, and we pray for and are confident that in God's good time it will be resolved:

We unconditionally affirm our continued support for William Kamm, the Founder of the Order of St Charbel of which this Community is part, and the Mission of Our Lady of the Ark, which he undertook over twenty five years ago, and which he has faithfully, selflessly and tirelessly served, in simple obedience to a call from God, for we believe him to be innocent of the charges, as he has claimed.

Many of us have known and loved William as a revered and close friend over nigh on twenty years, and in all of that time we have learnt to admire his strength of character, his integrity, honesty and forthrightness, his deep faith, his love of the Catholic Church, and his passionate devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and he will continue to enjoy our trust, for we know him to be motivated: not as the media would have it, by money and power to lord it over his followers; but by a humble, yet determined will to serve God, and to follow, with uncompromising obedience, the path that God has placed him on.

He is unsparing of himself, and patient in his endless dealings with people of every station and walk in life, in the demanding work for the Order and the Mission of Our Lady of the Ark, and as a devoted family man. He is considerate, kind, and compassionate to all who come to him for help or guidance through difficulties, and most of us have had direct experience of his generous and magnanimous spirit

In an age of unbridled portrayal on television and the press of the very basest of human behaviour, fed by a media mania for the sensational, today's society has become saturated with expectations of the worst in people. Perhaps it is no surprise therefore, that the media particularly and society in general, should misjudge the motives of this controversial figure, who has never attempted to hide from the Catholic Church, the directions that God has given him, and, of course, there has been no shortage of those, who would use any means to publicly impugn the character and integrity of the Little Pebble.

We respect the Jury's Verdict, but it is beyond our comprehension how the Little Pebble could be so misjudged by the Justice System, although we have come to expect such treatment from the media. We believe there must have been some error in the process, and we look forward with confidence to the Appeal which will be lodged in September, and so we wait in hope, and pray for its successful outcome.

But, whatever its outcome, we will continue to offer our loyalty and submission to the Bishops of the Order, to our Founder, and to our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, because we firmly believe the future of our Order rests only with the Providence of God and his Holy Vicar on earth, and that it will not cease to build its Communities, to pursue sanctity through the Evangelical Life, to promote it's apostolate of family in an age so sorely in need of a renewal of family values, to foster vocations to the priestly and religious life, and through its schools to educate children in the truths and tenets of the Catholic Faith.

We have the firm conviction that William Kamm and his Mission, and the Order of St. Charbel which he founded, will be justified by God, before the Church and the world, and will ultimately fulfil the destiny foretold by Our Blessed Mother Mary, over many years, through countless visionaries all over the world. These convictions are not lightly held, for we firmly believe the Order of St Charbel to be a work of God destined for ".... The re-evangelisation of the Mystical Body of Christ -- to re-live and to preach the authentic traditions and teachings of our Holy Catholic Church -- seeking to unify its Eastern and Western Traditions and to unite Christians everywhere, in a strong and determined Faith , so that there may be one flock under one shepherd; one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church ..." (Rule; 2004 Draft Revision) - and God's work will not be defeated.

The Rabbi Gamaliel (Acts: Ch 5: Vs 34-39) counselled the Sanhedrin "...if this be of God, you cannot overthrow it..", urging them to refrain from action against the Apostles, "...lest perhaps you be found to fight even against God..." so we have faith in and trust in God. At this juncture, to all appearances; William Kamm, the Mission he has worked for, and the Order he founded, may seem to be finished, and for those who have worked to destroy him and his work, it may seem to you, that you have won. But we remind everyone, but especially the Hierarchy of our beloved Catholic Church, that even the public Mission of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ seemed to end in abysmal failure, when He was nailed to the Cross on Calvary as the worst of criminals, whereas in truth it was the greatest Victory.

Just as through Calvary, came the Resurrection, the Ascension and Pentecost, triumphantly marking the birth of the early Church and the dawn of the Christian era, so we pray that the Little Pebble, in his innocence of these charges, may be raised up from the degradation he has been subjected to, and be justified by God before the Church and the World, to herald a new dawn for our Holy Mother Church, and its servant of destiny, the Order of St Charbel.

Time and again throughout history, God has confounded the proud, and used the humblest of instruments to get His Message to the Church and the World. ".....He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone which no one knows, except him who receives it....." Rev. Ch 2: 17 (RSV -- Catholic Edition)
