The aboriginal name for the area was PARRONRAH. It was first referred to as KANGAROO GROUND by surveyor James Meehan in November 1819, because of the great number of kangaroos there. However in 1840, Rev. William Clakre wrote that these animals had disappeared in the valley. Through the 1840s the name gradually changed to KANGAROO VALLEY, although for a time there was a move to name the township OSBORNE after the best known early settler.
