The Shoalhaven News of 1871 published the reminiiscences of Alexander Berry and William Lovegrove, and they stated that this town was named after local resident GREENWELL, an Aboriginal doctor able to cure toothacre by mesmeric passes, but his main claim to fame was his ability to cure snakebite. Berry himself often wrote GREENWELLS POINT in his letters
