Tomerong is a small township 22 km south of Nowra, located adjacent to the Princes Highway between Falls Creek and Wandandian. Tomerong is an
Aboriginal word meaning "Tall Timbers".

Pioneering families who lived in the Tomerong district from the 1850s were Lamb, Bryce, Watt and Mathie who were all involved in farming. The town gained in importance as the main south road was developoed, and also as the turn-off for Sassafras and Braidwood. John Parnell established the Traveller's Rest Hotel around 1860 and he had it for much of its licensed life-span of more than 40 years.
