Profile

Clay has always been for me an accessible and immediate material. I remember, as a child, the pure white layer of clay just below the dark topsoil in our  yard and our unsealed street after rain, soft and rutted with smooth red clay similar to the 4 metre clay cliffs at the local creek.

My introduction to ceramics occurred in 1971, when I built a kick wheel for my sister to use for  high school. I began trying to throw pots myself, eventually ending up with the kick wheel, and continued to throw pots.

1975/6 were spent travelling, mainly in Asia, India, the Middle-East and also in Britain. I became aware of the innate role of ceramics in most cultures, the variety of use, form and decoration adopted in each, and the overwhelming influence of tradition.

Back in Australia in 1978 I decided it was time to develop my self taught skills and attended classes at The Potters Society of Australia 1978/9.

My partner and I moved to the Shoalhaven in 1983. We built a house out of mud bricks, beginning a long and rewarding association with earth building and earth builders.

1n 1986, with little throwing experience, I began production throwing at a local pottery. After 6 months my throwing had reached the stage where I was confident enough to set up a workshop at home, build a 20 cu.ft gas fibre kiln and start developing my own style and range of pottery.

I have been producing and developing this range since 1987. With 15 years experience in the craft and having gained a degree of proficiency and confidence in the medium, old ideas are being revisited and new horizons beckon.

I have been experimenting with larger platters and taller forms. The larger surface areas on these forms have provided an opportunity to apply glazes more spontaneously, yet with enough control to produce colours and textures that reflect the landscape of the Shoalhaven, the seascape range.

Most recently I have been returned to simple forms and glazes, but am also developing a series of distorted and squared forms using a variety of glazes.
