Dialup FAQ

 

Error 630 - The port was disconnected due to hardware failure

- The first thing to try is to turn your computer off completely, as if you are not going to use it, then turn it back on again and try making a connection. (If you have an External Modem, also turn the modem off and back on. Ensure that the Modem is on BEFORE turning the computer on)
- Remove any strings that you may have in your modem properties(Click here for instructions on how to Add/Remove a Modem String)
- Try re-installing your Modem
- Your Modem could be fried due to lightening or a power surge, or the modem may have died due to age.

 

Error 676 - The line is busy

- Ensure that you are dialling the correct telephone number (0198 331 355) and not one of our old telephone numbers.
- Try dialling the telephone number from your telephone and see if you get a busy signal or fax noises. If you get a busy signal, your telephone exchange may be congested. If you receive fax noises it means the telephone line is fine.
- Try re-installing your Modem

 

Error 678 - There is no answer

- The first thing to try is to turn your computer off completely, as if you are not going to use it, then turn it back on again and try making a connection. (If you have an External Modem, also turn the modem off and back on. Ensure that the Modem is on BEFORE turning the computer on)
- Ensure that the telephone line is plugged into your modem, and into the jack that says LINE (NOT phone)
- Are there any crackling noises on the line, you may have a problem with your telephone line.
- Your modem might be trying to connect too fast for what your telephone line can handle. Try putting a string in your modem. (Click here for instructions on how to Add/Remove a Modem String)
- Try re-installing your Modem
- Your Modem could be fried due to lightening or a power surge, or the modem may have died due to age.

 

Error 680 - There is No Dial Tone

The two main reasons for this error message is either the physical telephone problem (Eg Telephone not working, dodgy cord going to your modem, not plugged into the correct phone jack) or your modem is not functioning correctly.

- The first thing to try is to turn your computer off completely, as if you are not going to use it, then turn it back on again and try making a connection. (If you have an External Modem, also turn the modem off and back on. Ensure that the Modem is on BEFORE turning the computer on)
- Ensure that the telephone line is plugged into your modem, and into the jack that says LINE (NOT phone)
- Plug a telephone on the cord that goes into the modem to ensure that the cord is not damaged
- Take off any surge protectors, in between the telephone line and the modem.
- Disable the 'Wait for Dialtone' option in your modem (Click here for instructions on how to disable)
- Try re-installing your modem
- Your Modem could be fried due to lightening or a power surge, or the modem may have died due to age.


Error 691 - Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain

This error means that either your Username and or Password are incorrect, or your account might be out of hours, expired or blocked.

- Try retyping your Password (Note: Your password is CAsE SeNsiTive)
- Ensure that your Username is your FULL Email address, eg username@shoal.net.au
- Make sure that you don't have the CAPS LOCK key on when typing either your Username or Password
- Your Account might temporarily have run out of hours, expired or has been temporarily blocked due to a payment not being received. Contact the Accounts people to check your account status.
- Reload the latest Shoalnet CD or remove and recreate the connection manually (For help see Dialup Configuration on the left)

 

Error 777 - The connection attempt failed because the modem on the remote computer is out of order

- The first thing to try is to turn your computer off completely, as if you are not going to use it, then turn it back on again and try making a connection. (If you have an External Modem, also turn the modem off and back on. Ensure that the Modem is on BEFORE turning the computer on)
- Remove any strings that you may have in your modem properties(Click here for instructions on how to Add/Remove a Modem String)
- Try re-installing your Modem
- Your Modem could be fried due to lightening or a power surge, or the modem may have died due to age.

 

Error 797 - A connection to the remote computer could not be established because the modem was not found or was busy

- The first thing to try is to turn your computer off completely, as if you are not going to use it, then turn it back on again and try making a connection. (If you have an External Modem, also turn the modem off and back on. Ensure that the Modem is on BEFORE turning the computer on)
- Remove any strings that you may have in your modem properties(Click here for instructions on how to Add/Remove a Modem String)
- Try re-installing your Modem
